Electronics don’t get moldy—they deteriorate!
The saying "Jutro już było" (Eng. "Tomorrow was already yesterday") is a Polish expression that describes a situation where something anticipated in the future has already happened or come true—often surprisingly quickly.
What was cutting-edge information technology, expensive metals, and specialized assembly expertise yesterday is now useless, slow, and incompatible electronic waste. But the way the use of electronics evolved yesterday has created our reality today.
The exhibition features microchips as silkscreen prints.
Silkscreen printing is involved in the manufacture of microchips, and obsolete chips have now been transformed into silkscreen prints.
The technique used in the works of the Finnish-Polish art collective 6984684 draws heavily on a technique developed by Toimi Tytti, in which the images of a print series form a series of monotypes. Each print differs from the previous one as the movement of the ink creates new forms in the image. The addition of colors and water between printings creates glimpses of aging electronics—wear and corrosion—between the parts of the series. Electronics do not mold - they deteriorate.
Collective 6984684 believes it is beneficial to study history in order to understand the present. The decisions made yesterday have shaped our present. The present shapes what is known about the future—or has that already happened? Was it already decided yesterday?
As development progresses and the digital layer takes on new forms—instead of asking “Is it possible?”, we should ask “Is it necessary?”.
